Cannazon: Electrum (Bitcoin Wallet)

Info

All information in this chapter is related to using the Electrum wallet on Tails. Using it on other operating systems may vary.

You are lucky as a Bitcoin wallet is preinstalled on Tails: Electrum. Electrum does not download the blockchain, so there is no waiting time when starting. At this point we do also want to mention the official Electrum documentation at docs.electrum.org and the documentation for Electrum on Tails at tails.boum.org.

Prerequisite

As a prerequisite please make sure you have setup your persistent storage on Tails, as your wallet can not be saved otherwise. Have a look at the official Tails documentation at tails.boum.org.

Starting Electrum and setting up your first wallet is pretty easy, so have a look at the next steps.

  1. To start Electrum choose “Applications”  ▸ “Internet”  ▸ “Electrum Bitcoin Wallet”.
  2. Enter a name for your wallet and click “Next”.
  3. Choose “Standard wallet”  and click “Next”.
  4. Choose “Create a new seed”  and click “Next”.
  5. Choose “Standard”  as seed type and click “Next”.
  6. Write down the 12 word seed that is displayed. Otherwise you will not be able to recover your wallet if you loose the wallet file. Click “Next”.
  7. Enter the 12 word seed that you have written down previously and click “Next”.
  8. Enter a password for your wallet and confirm it. We recommend generating one with KeePassX and save it there as explained here.
  9. Your wallet is created successfully and will be opened now. Click on “Tools”  ▸ “Preferences”  ▸ “Transactions”. Check the option “Use multiple change addresses”.
  10. Click on “Appearance”  and set “BTC”  as the base unit. Choose “blockchainbdgpzk.onion”  as “Online Block Explorer”  and close the preferences.
  11. Click on “File”  and “Save Copy”. Save your wallet to your persistent storage.

  2. Click on “View”  and on “Addresses”.
  3. Right-click on one of the addresses and select “Copy Address”.
  4. Use this address in your account settings or for receiving coins from e.g. a Bitcoin tumbler or another service to obtain Bitcoin.

Receiving Bitcoin with your wallet

If you have coins in your wallet and the balance is unlocked you are ready to spend them.

  1. Start your local Electrum as explained in the previous steps, open your wallet and enter your password.
  2. Navigate to the order detail page of the previously created order and copy the Bitcoin address.
  3. Click on “Send”  and paste the address in the field “Pay to”.
  4. Copy the exact amount from the order detail page.
  5. Paste the amount in the input field for “Amount”. Verify that the amount fields displays “BTC”  and not “mBTC”. Otherwise not enough coins will be send, have a look at the previous steps how to change this option.
  6. Click on “Send”  and enter the password for your wallet and click on “Confirm”. Your payment should now be confirmed within the next minutes.

Paying an order from your wallet

Please make sure your have understood the way Bitcoin works and are sure that your coins are not related to your identity. Bitcoin is not an anonymous cryptocurrency like Monero so please double check our advice on how to buy Bitcoin.

Although already explained, it is really important to write down your wallet seed and store it somewhere save. Nothing is more painful than loosing all your funds because you just have not taken this five minutes to write it down.
